From Classroom to Community: The “Learn & Play English” Success Story in Bolu, Turkiye

The “Learn & Play English” project, initiated and organized by STARTINFORUM, stands as a landmark initiative in the educational landscape of Bolu, Turkiye.

What began as a targeted pilot program for the middle school students of Turkuaz College evolved into a city-wide movement, redefining how young learners interact with the English language.

The Vision: Converting Curriculum into Experience

The core philosophy of the project was simple yet transformative: Language is not a subject to be studied, but a tool to be lived.

While traditional curricula often remain confined to textbooks, “Learn & Play English” aimed to convert academic topics into real-world experiences.

The project sought to dismantle “language anxiety”—the psychological barrier that prevents students from speaking—by replacing high-stakes testing with high-engagement play.

A Multidimensional Methodology

The project moved students beyond the four walls of the classroom through a diverse array of activities designed to engage different learning styles:

  • Creative Arts: Students engaged in theatrical performances and puppet making, allowing them to “hide” behind a character or a puppet. This technique significantly lowered social inhibition, making students more willing to experiment with new vocabulary.

  • Field Exploration: The city of Bolu itself became a textbook. The students visited local historical and natural sites, converting geography and history lessons into active English tours.

  • Social & Physical Engagement: Through organized picnics and sports activities, English became the medium for teamwork and social bonding, proving to students that the language is a natural part of their daily life and environment.

The Human Element: International Trainers & Expert Mentorship

A critical factor in the project’s success was the involvement of international trainers. However, these trainers were not merely native speakers; they were specialists mentored by STARTINFORUM experts.

Before entering the classroom, the trainers underwent intensive preparation to align with the STARTINFORUM methodology:

  • Age-Appropriate Pedagogy: Tailoring communication to the developmental stages of kids and teens.

  • Contextual Integration: Learning how to connect English to the local Turkish context and the specific environment of the city and nearby attractions.

  • Playful Interaction: Mastering techniques to maintain high energy and engagement without losing educational rigor.

Scaling the Impact: From Turkuaz College to the Region

The project’s trajectory serves as a blueprint for educational scaling:

  1. Phase I: Launched with Turkuaz College Middle School students.

  2. Phase II: Expanded to the entire school due to overwhelming positive feedback from parents and teachers.

  3. Phase III: Integrated several other schools across Bolu, creating a regional network of interactive English learning.

Measurable Outcomes: Confidence and Cultural Pride

The most impactful result of the “Learn & Play English” project was not found in test scores, but in the audible confidence of the students.

  • Breaking the Silence: Students who previously hesitated to speak began using English fluently to describe their hobbies, their city, and their culture.

  • Cultural Ambassadorship: By learning to talk about Bolu’s natural beauty and local history in English, students developed a sense of pride. They weren’t just learning a foreign language; they were learning how to share their own world with the global community.

Conclusion: A Blueprint for Future Projects

The “Learn & Play English” project proves that when you align expert teacher training with a creative, place-based curriculum, the results are immediate and profound.

STARTINFORUM has demonstrated that the key to language mastery is not more hours in the classroom, but more hours spent playing, creating, and exploring in the real world.
